Veggie Grill Review

Over the holidays Mel and I were out shopping when we stumbled upon “Veggie Grill”. We have heard of the “fast-food vegetarian restaurant” for some time now so we thought it was time to give it a try. We had Buoy so we couldn’t eat in the restaurant, so the food had to be brought home with us. There are lots of choices on the menu and it is all vegetarian, even though they use “chicken” in the descriptions. I actually had to go up to the counter to be assured that it is fake chicken. Being as I am a omnivore and Mel is the vegetarian in the family, it was a relief to order at this restaurant knowing we could both share our food. I usually get to try Mel’s meals, but quite often she can’t try mine. I always kind of feel bad. But not here!

VeggieGrillUDistrictI ordered the Papa’s portobello, which is a mushroom burger. I am always surprised by how much portobello mushrooms actually give the impression that you are eating meat. It was a hearty burger and very tasty. Now is it healthier than a old-fashioned cow burger? I will table that debate to the comments section.

PapasPortobelloMel went for the buffalo wings. That made me giggle considering her avoidance of meat. But I was glad that she was able to try some, even if it is a fake version of it. I wasn’t to excited about the sauce, but the fake chicken was actually pretty good.

The sides we chose was the kale and sweet potato fries. I was not that into the kale, which surprised the hell out of me. I thought I would enjoy them more. But the sweet potato fries were good, but only about average.

I think if you are a vegetarian, this is a good place to go. You can order and not have to ask “is there meat in that”. If you arn’t a vegetarian at all, it is worth checking it out for the different styles of food, you may like something! How this place shines is for the mixed family, the carnivores and the vegetarians (sounds like a Twilight film or something, I am sure the veggies are the vampires!). I think the veggie of the household would appreciate a night of not having to ask “is there meat in that?”

  1. I just went here last month!! It’s completely VEGAN! I LOVED it. My mom got the same thing you did, and I got a “cheeseburger.” I am so glad this place opened in the Udistrict. I must return and try more!!

  2. In my oh so humble opinion the portobello mushroom burger rocks! It really does have a fantastic meaty texture to it…As for whether or not it’s healthy, it’s as healthy as you make it…If you are topping it with onion rings, healthy it’s not ;)

I wish we had the Veggie Grill in my little corner of Canada! Vegetarian focused restaurants are non-existent here!

    • Good point katie. I think it could be real healthy if you cut out the bun, but then can u call it a burger? lol

Yes being a Cunuck myself I can not recall any canadian veggie restaurants…that is a shame but I think they are just catching on here though…maybe there is still hope in canada!

      • I think it depends on the bun! I’m all about bread if it’s made with whole grains! Granted it doesn’t have to be a bun the size of face though

Canada is usually a decade behind on everything…So I will keep on wishin’ and hopin’! Heck we are finally getting TARGET…We’re moving up in life ;)
